Real estate is broadly broken into two major categories - commercial and residential real estate.
Residential real estate is the way it sounds. It consists of single and small multifamily homes, four units and under. This category of real estate has the most buyers, sellers, and investors in the marketplace.
Commercial real estate is all other properties where some form of income producing activity is taking place, whether it’s by the owner of the property, or by the tenant of a property. This category entails asset types such as retail, office, industrial, and large multifamily properties. The market typically consists of investors, as well as some owner users for specialized properties.
Both real estate categories have upsides and downsides to them from different perspectives and motives for buying and or selling.
